Chattanooga, Tennessee, 1914. Tanna Cravens boards an airship bound for a colony in Fairyland… But a magical frontier ruled like the Old South isn’t the best home for a woman ahead of her time.
Abandoned by her husband on a failing farm atop an ancient fairy hill, Tanna finds herself in the middle of a war between the human plantation owners and the indigenous elven tribes who want them gone.
With her farm in flames and a dark fairy hoard descending on the colony, Tanna must secure a safe place for those she loves before the paths between the worlds are closed forever.
In an alternate history where Shades of Milk & Honey and Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell might have taken place in England, Havenwood is found just beyond the door between Fairyland and the American South.

When I purchased this book I expected it to take a while to get through because of the size. I woke up the morning after it arrived at 3:00am and could not get back to sleep so I started to read. I am not sure how many pages I read in that first sitting, but I could not put it down from that point on. In a way that I have never quite experienced before, Havenwood drew me in. It seems to me the pages actually have magic in them, transformative of ones perspective of this world, at the least, and much more powerful if you are ready to work with it. The characters have taken me on a journey that has changed a part of me. I loved every part of the story. I sped along what felt to be a truly magical path, I even dreamed about it! It has shifted the way I view my own life and situations. Plus, it deeply reminded me of the intoxication of allowing yourself to really release into the possibility of other worlds. There were tears by the end! And I love the "This is not" before The End. Havenwood is a work that will be treasured for generations, I can't wait for my daughters to meet Tanna one day!Product details

This book is PHENOMENAL! I don't ever want it to end. The detail is stupendous and my imagination runs wild with every page. I highly recommend this wonderful read! If you read Jacqueline Carey or Diana Gabaldon you will really enjoy anything by Eric Slade.
Amazing read! I am now reading this book for the second time and it is just as intriguing, and has held my attention just as raptly as the first time I read it! Slade does an incredible job of describing the Green in such magnificent detail, that it's as if I have escaped to that world myself! I feel a rush of excitement at every adventure that I experience with the characters. I highly recommend this book to ANYONE who loves to read. I feel that it encompasses several different genres and will be thoroughly enjoyed by everyone who reads it!
I really enjoyed this story, both because it's set partially in my hometown of Chattanooga, and because it took me back to the roots of some of my favorite stories growing up. Full of fairies (not the ones from Disney, but based more in the Irish/Celtic mythos. Tanna has he opportunity to move into the Green - a different world - where I often fantasized I might be able to go. A great job weaving something of epic fantasy with historical fiction. Growing up in the literal shadow of Lookout Mtn, I could feel the Green always just a step away!
Slade is a gifted storyteller, and his latest offering does not disappoint. Havenwood brings us to the rustic world of Faerie where humans have asserted dominance in an attempt to conquer yet another land. Tanna Cravens doesn't much care about the politics of her new home. She simply wants to escape the constraints of polite society and a less than idyllic relationship with her mother. Tanna is a strong-willed woman who knows what she wants, but even she is tested by the dangers she encounters in her new life. Slade shows us just how far Tanna is willing to go to protect what she has built...
Perhaps the best mark of an excellent book is that, no matter how long it is, it isn't long enough. I gorged on the nearly 500 pages of Havenwood over just a few days and now that I am finished, I am bereft and longing for another glimpse into Slade's brilliant, fresh re-imagining of The Green - a land that exists in parallel to our mundane world and which is stuffed full of fairies, poetry, airships, goblins, feral humans, and complex, beautifully drawn characters, both mundane and magical. My only regret is that I can't jump directly from this book into the sequel.
One of the best books that I have read in ages and I give it the very highest of recommendations.
After reading the prologue, "The Fairy Killers" I eagerly waited from the publication of, "Havenwood" and I was not disappointed. The storyline is an interesting concept of a fairyland theme. Eric Slade created a world that is amazing in it's description of the land and all it contains and the characters that live there. It has everything one could want in this genre; magic, good vs evil, humans hell bent on destruction of a world and bending it to suit them, action, sadness and joy. I can't wait for the sequel, "The Graycoat's Daughter".
This book is amazing. I have followed the author's blog for some time and knew he was a good writer. However, blog writing is a different skill set than fiction - I was pleasantly surprised that, if anything, he is an even better fiction writer than nonfiction writer. His language is beautiful without being flowery, and the story is engaging. I hear he has the first draft of the sequel finished, and I can't wait to read it.
In explanation of the ratings for violence and sexual content while there is some mention of violence, it is a tiny part of the story and not at all graphic. The sexual content is very minimal, but there is a scene with explicit description. Neither is a big part of the book, so if that kind of thing bothers you, if you can make it through a page or two, it won't affect your enjoyment. (I don't have a problem with it, personally.)
